Sensex falls 130 pts, Nifty below 10,100 ahead of RBI outcome

The key Indian benchmark indices were trading below the record high tested in the month of November as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy outcome due later in the day during market hours. There is a consensus in the market that the six-member monetary policy committee won’t change the policy repo rate in their two-day meet that concludes on Wednesday.

Globally, European markets opened lower as investors monitored corporate earnings and fresh economic data.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 opened 0.22 per cent lower with all sectors and major bourses in negative territory.

Back home, at 14:08 hours, BSE SENSEX was at 32671.68 down by -130.76 points or by -0.4 % and then NSE Nifty was at 10066.45 down by -51.8 points or by -0.51 %.

Among the companies, IOC, HPCL and BPCL shares fell around a per cent intraday as research house Kotak continued to see downside risks to consensus estimates for oil marketing companies, given its concerns on Street’s generous assumptions for the marketing segment.

The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 32804.75 and intraday low of 32621.1. The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10104.2 and intraday low of 10051.6.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 514.05,-1.83%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 482.00,-1.73%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 665.00,-1.62%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1652.00,-1.59%), State Bank of India (Rs. 314.70,-1.44%), among others.

On the other hand, the top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1275.60,+1.19%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 921.15,+1.06%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 266.90,+0.62%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 8541.00,+0.53%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 989.00,+0.47%), among others.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2825, shares advanced were 1147 while 1524 shares declined and 154 were unchanged.
