Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty stay on firm footing; L&T up 2%

The Indian equities continued to trade higher in afternoon session of day’s trade, albeit paring some of early gains, undermining mixed cues from Asian peers, as rally in index heavyweights such as Maruti Suzuki, NTPC, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro and Bajaj Auto boosted market sentiment. On the sectoral front, all the thirteen indices were trading in green, while capital goods and auto index emerged as top gainers, rising as much as 1.52 per cent and 1.43 per cent, respectively. Shares of Reliance Communications rose over 3 per cent after the company told ET that it was negotiating a settlement with China Development Bank, one of its largest creditors. Among others, Larsen & Toubro soared nearly 2 per cent after the company said that its arm L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering (LTHE) has bagged order worth of over Rs 1,600 crore from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).

At 12:21 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 32768.68, up by 171.5 points or by 0.53 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 10104.3, up by 60.2 points or by 0.6 per cent.

In the day’s trade so-far, the Sensex touched intraday high of 32856.09 and intraday low of 32598.12, while the NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10128.35 and intraday low of 10061.9.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 8797.05,+2.28%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 179.25,+2.28%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 682.20,+2.12%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1211.30,+1.79%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 3163.85,+1.78%), among others.

On the flip side, Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 263.00,-0.75%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 508.60,-0.58%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2623.75,-0.29%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 925.25,-0.24%), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (Rs. 2193.15,-0.08%), were among top losers on BSE.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was strong. On BSE out of total shares traded 2703, shares advanced were 1785, while 787 shares declined, and 131 were unchanged.
