Sensex, Nifty choppy amid weak global cues

Indian benchmarks turned choppy during the late morning deals as investors cashed profits in metal, healthcare, PSU and auto stocks, amid weak Asian cues after US-China trade spat escalated.

However, a rise in shares of index heavyweight TCS capped Sensex losses, after the IT major posted reported better-than-expected earnings. It was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising 2.02 per cent to Rs 1,915.

Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 20.73 crore, while DIIs bought shares worth a net Rs 293.96 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

A weak trend other in Asian bourses and sustained capital outflows weighed on investor sentiments here, brokers said.

At 11:20 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 36191.89 down by 47.73 points or by 0.13 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 10941.1 down by 6.15 points or by 0.06 per cent.

In the choppy trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 36341.08 and intraday low of 36169.7 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10976.65 and intraday low of 10923.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 1928.25,+2.73%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 3133.00,+1.42%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 538.00,+1.02%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1701.75,+0.86%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1380.25,+0.57%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 269.00,-3.24%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 219.40,-2.90%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 155.60,-1.74%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 558.80,-1.72%), State Bank of India (Rs. 259.00,-1.71%), among others.

Among the sectors, IT index was at 14224.06 up by 139.16 points or by 0.99%. Ramco Systems Ltd. (Rs. 370.20,+5.10%), Larsen & Toubro Infotech Ltd. (Rs. 1784.15,+3.94%), SQS India BFSI Ltd. (Rs. 537.15,+3.58%), Trigyn Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 127.90,+3.19%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 1928.50,+2.74%),.

On the flip side, The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2354 , shares advanced were 1028 while 1192 shares declined and 134 were unchanged.
