Sensex, Nifty give up gains amid heavy sell-off

A sharp selloff is seen among banking stocks, with the Nifty Bank shedding over half a percent. Midcaps, too, have seen some selling, along with consumption names. Tata Group stocks, Tata Motors and TCS, are the top gainers, while Vedanta, SBI, and Cipla have lost the most.

At 14:30 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 34931.92 down by 19 points or by 0.05 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 10510.7 down by 13.3 points or by 0.13 per cent.

Sensex touched intraday high of 35196.03 and intraday low of 34889.72 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10600.25 and intraday low of 10506.45.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 194.60,+2.61%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 104.60,+2.55%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 1918.45,+1.51%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 213.45,+1.47%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 578.50,+1.03%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 207.10,-6.92%), State Bank of India (Rs. 285.85,-3.20%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 606.00,-2.93%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 324.70,-1.32%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 7076.45,-1.27%), among others.

Among the sectors, TECk index was at 7091.06 up by 46.18 points or by 0.66%. Infibeam Avenues Ltd. (Rs. 42.15,+4.20%), Sterlite Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 372.20,+1.99%), Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (Rs. 446.00,+1.87%), Jagran Prakashan Ltd. (Rs. 110.50,+1.80%), Tata Communications Ltd. (Rs. 501.55,+1.62%),.

On the flip side, Metal index was at 12837.16 down by -254.22 points or by -1.94%. Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 207.10,-6.92%), NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 109.40,-5.36%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 180.45,-1.29%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 349.25,-1.16%), National Aluminium Company Ltd. (Rs. 70.10,-1.06%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2739 , shares advanced were 1240 while 1337 shares declined and 162 were unchanged.
