Sensex, Nifty open in red; OMCs, metals slip

India's stock market opened lower on Thursday with Nifty slipped below 10,680 level, led by weak trading in JSW Steel, Yes Bank, Cipla, DLF, PFC, HDFC, IndusInd Bank are among others. Overseas, the Asian stocks were trading mostly lower, following a lower closing at Wall Street in overnight trade, following a weak US session overnight, led by arrest of top executive of Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies by Canadian authorities, fanning fears of further tensions between China and the United States.

The rupee on Thursday opened 33 paise lower at 70.79 against the US dollar. The domestic unit on Wednesday ticked higher by 3 paise to 70.46 amid weakness in the greenback and easing crude oil prices.

At 9:41 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 35592.06, down by 292.35 points or by 0.81 per cent, and the NSE Nifty was at 10676.4, down by 106.5 points or by 0.99 per cent.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 193.20,-2.65%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 170.05,-2.07%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 306.20,-1.95%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 344.45,-1.89%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 7421.95,-1.82%), among others.

On the flip side, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 425.70,+2.93%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 184.60,+0.65%), Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. (Rs. 374.35,+0.05%) were among top gainers on the BSE.

On the sectoral front, Realty and Metal stocks were among top losers on BSE, falling as much as 2.3 per cent and 1.8 per cent, respectively.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 1551 , shares advanced were 373 while 1122 shares declined and 56 were unchanged.
