Mid-Session: Sensex, Nifty under pressure; Auto stocks lose sheen

Indian benchmarks continued to hover in red during the noon trading session amid decline in Auto and metal stocks. Metal index has hit 17-month low on Thursday, amid fears of global slowdown. Shares of automobile companies are trading lower with 4.5% in past three days as the auto companies delivered a subdued volume performance in November 2018 and concerns of muted outlook. Amara Raja Batteries, Ashok Leyland, Balkrishna Industries, Bharat Forge and Force Motors have hit their respective 52-week lows on the BSE. TVS Motor Company, Maruti Suzuki India, Balkrishna Industries, Apollo Tyres, Bharat Forge, Eicher Motors, Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors were down in the range of 1% to 4% today.

At 12:25 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 35487.54 down by 396.87 points or by 1.11 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 10662.75 down by 120.15 points or by 1.11 per cent. In the choppy trade so-far, Sensex touched intraday high of 35707.23 and intraday low of 35468.12 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10722.65 and intraday low of 10641.6.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 184.15,+0.41%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 141.45,+0.39%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 415.00,+0.34%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2766.00,+0.15%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 7245.15,-4.16%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 89.60,-3.14%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 164.35,-2.87%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 168.85,-2.76%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1180.40,-2.55%), among others.

Among the sectors, Power index was at 1907.09 up by -6.39 points or by -0.33%. Siemens Ltd. (Rs. 931.10,+2.62%), Torrent Power Ltd. (Rs. 263.40,+1.07%), Thermax Ltd. (Rs. 1123.50,+0.63%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 184.15,+0.41%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 141.45,+0.39%),.

On the flip side, Auto index was at 19923.6 down by -358.56 points or by -1.77%. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 7245.15,-4.16%), TVS Motor Company Ltd. (Rs. 534.70,-3.61%), Balkrishna Industries Ltd. (Rs. 907.90,-2.90%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 164.35,-2.87%), Bharat Forge Ltd. (Rs. 521.00,-2.06%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2431 , shares advanced were 612 while 1675 shares declined and 144 were unchanged.
